Benchmark Genetics carries out seminar on genetic innovation for salmonids

Benchmark Genetics realiza “Taller Internacional sobre Genómica Aplicada al Mejoramiento Genético de Resistencia de Enfermedades en Salmónidos”.

The event, which took place on Thursday November 8th, at the Radisson Hotel in Puerto Varas, counted with the participation of several scientific experts from the University of Chile and the Roslin Institute, who presented an investigation funded by Chile and the United Kingdom on the Genetics in resistance to sea lice and SRS.

Alan Tinch, Director of Technical Services at Benchmark Genetics, presented the talk “Applying results in the industry and explained the company’s production strategy”, including his hopes of applying gene editing techniques for salmon, shrimp and tilapia.

Tinch said that “collaboration is important in the development of effective and efficient solutions against sea lice and other pathogens that affect the salmon farming industry.”

During his presentation, he added that “collaboration is an integral part of our global approach to face the main challenges in the aquaculture industry; Successful egg production programs operate by applying the technology available to breed strains that are better adapted to the aquaculture environment, which leads to improvements in both animal welfare and economic performance ”

"Discovering what genes control the ad of effective breeding programs to produce resistant salmon for our clients is our focus on resistance to sea lice and SRS will ensure the continuity of effective breeding programs to produce tough salmon for our clients" Alan Tinch

Matías del Campo, general manager of Benchmark Genetics Chile, in his closing words, commented: “this activity reflects the quality of genetics that exists in Chile; Nowadays we have become a commercial company, but we understand the need of applied science in order to deliver quality products and the effective improvement of the industry ”.
